Hi all, was just online to a friend, and told her how ill I had been at the weekend, she knows I take mtx and tramadol and paracetemol. Also waiting results for other autoimmune diseases. She suggested that I take too much medication, and that maybe I should stop the painkillers for a start. I actually tried this around a month ago, as they dont seem to help anyway, I have constant swelling in ankles, elbows and hands, as well as the pain, and also now hips and neck and shoulder!!! By the afternoon of that day I was in so much pain that I couldnt move. So started them again. The only other thing I can stop is the mtx, and as I have joint damage I dont think its a good idea. The thing is she has made me think, am I in the wrong? Should I rethink my meds? If anything I think I need more not less, and am seeing my GP Thursday to try to get something to help me sleep, especially due to my work situation. Be glad of opinions, thanks BARBARA

Hi Barbie, No you are NOT in the wrong! By all means discuss this with your GP and go over all your meds with him, but we get this often from people who don't realise what a vile disease this is. It's probably people who won't even take paracetamol for a headache (and most of us were like this pre-RA!) but they just do not understand that "a bit of arthritis" needs strong drugs to prevent our joints from being eaten away!
Don't stop your drugs just to please someone else, this is your body and you know what you need!
Love, Doreen xx

Thanks everyone!!!! Sorry Miss Jenni!!! will behave in future I promise!!! I suppose it does sound stupid, but you know when someone makes you think "oh, perhaps I am in the wrong, and need to rethink things" Then you worry that you make too much fuss over things. Thanks for replies BARBARA

I agree completely with Doreen and Jenni. I often say it would good for people to try out or bodies for a while to feel what it's like with RA. I would take what ever is offered to help with the pain. I hope that you have a good visit with your G.P. Take care Barbie Girl. x

Dear Barbie girl,
In my opinion, the quality of your life is important. Take the meds that you are prescribed and, if still suffering, ask for a medication review. Those who 'know' better than the medics should be ashamed for suggesting otherwise.

Absolutely never ever take advice, however well meaning, from someone who isn't qualified in the world of rheumatoid.
I cannot fathom why people feel a need to do this but they do, ALL the time.
See your GP/rheumy and ask to discuss all your meds and what other possibilities there are for you.
I know I am always harping on about herbs etc (!) but there are some natural remedies one can take along side the meds (with Dr's knowledge and from a proper herbalist) which can help with other symptoms, not necessarily the rheumatoid.
I take herbs etc for anxiety, sleeplessness, worry as well as some anti-inflams....
Prayers,
Amanda

Hi Barbie, I agree with all the wise comments that have made - we don't take the damn pills for FUN or put up with the side effects, and it's your quality of life that counts. Keep popping them until your advised by your rheumy or GP to do otherwise.
Love,
Barbara XXXXX

Needless to say, I agree with everyone else - by all means talk through the meds with your gp. but certainly don't stop taking any of them - well, guess your previous experience tells you that anyway. Hope your gp is able to give you some relief.
